Lady with the Lamp Awards 2015 | Top 100 Blogs in Nursing

Top 100 Blogs in Nursing

Known as “the lady with the lamp” for her work during the Crimean War, Florence Nightingale is widely regarded as the founder of modern nursing. In 1859, Nightingale authored Notes on Nursing. The book served as the cornerstone of nursing education at the time and is still considered a classic introduction to the practice of nursing to this day.

The Lady with the Lamp Awards by Venture Medical spotlight nursing blogs and online publications that continue to serve the nursing community through advice, thoughtfulness, sharing of experiences and, at times, humor.

In no particular order, here are Venture Medical’s 2015 Lady with the Lamp Award recipients:

Frugal Nurse

Website: frugalnurse.com

I enjoy taking care of myself and my family. Given my profession, that’s probably not surprising. I value good health and to the best of my ability have always tried to follow my healthcare providers’ recommendations for diet, exercise, routine exams, screening tests and vaccinations.

But I am also a frugal person. I wish I had countless piles of cash at my disposal, but I don’t. When I choose to make an expensive purchase I ask myself: 1) Do I really need the item? 2) Is there a cheaper option? 3) Where can I purchase the item at the lowest price?

How I wish I could do that with my healthcare!

Tales of a School Zoned Nurse

Website: childrenarepresent.com

I’m a school nurse doing what school nurses do: standing rigid in the front-lines of the war against lice, patching up playground boo-boos, begging parents to bring their child’s emergency medication to school, and helping the snacks in the teacher’s lounge mysteriously disappear. I cover two elementary schools and a middle school that I might refer to as Disneyland, Diabetic Land, and Teenage Wasteland. Sometimes my job is funny, sometimes it’s heartbreaking, and sometimes it’s rewarding in a way words can’t describe; above all, it’s unique.

Adrienne, Student Nurse

Website: adriennern.com

Follow on Twitter at: https://twitter.com/Kalanna

What is there to know? I’m a nursing student working towards my RN, BScN. Only one year left to go!

I have many dreams of what areas I’d like to work after graduation, but being that dreams have this funny way of changing in the living, I’m leaving my options open. I’m a writer because there are stories to be told and everyday at work more weave themselves. Partly, I’m blogging in order to discover those dreams. It also keeps my arrow pointed in the right direction and makes this dream of becoming a nurse rich indeed.

The other reason is that I am passionate about nurses and nursing students using social media for professional use. Recently I learned that there’s a word for that: “meaningful use.” I have heard words such as #storytelller – and its myriad of applications – and #reflectivenarrative and wonder if they may apply to me. I’m a romantic, so the idea of being a nurse storyteller thrills.

I love going into work. I love writing about nursing.

I wanted to publish this blog so that new nurses had a much needed outlet to vent about life after nursing school and why being a graduate nurse can feel like a roller coaster ride.

If you are anything like me and my group of nursing friends- you are so happy come graduation time that it’s FINALLY over. You heard rumors that being a graduate nurse was not fun but you don’t care- you’re ready for that paycheck! So- you nail your interview and get that first GN position. You go through the hospital orientation, get matched with a preceptor and you’re off! Let the fun begin right? Wrong! My friend (also a new nurse) said it best when she said, “Andria, I seriously feel stupid every single day!” Welcome to being a new nurse! Don’t worry- I’ve heard it gets better after years of practice…

The Nurses Nurse is your ultimate guide for nurses and patients. I offer resources on how to protect your license and your life from the everyday business practices of hospitals and institutions that employ nurses and provide medical services. Across the country there are hospitals, clinics and skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) that do not staff according to ethical guidelines that allow for effective and timely health care. Right now I have the most comprehensive list of Nurse and Patient Friendly Hospitals, Clinics and SNFs . My mission is to help you find the best health care institutions based on the track records provided by patients and staff. Whether you are a patient or a nurse, I want C.A. R. E.* to be the prime ingredient of the health services you receive.

This Blog started as an attempt to take ownership over my body and my health in a time when I was feeling helpless and out of control. I have continued since to use this blog as an opportunity to process and share my thoughts and experiences as I work to focus my energy on health and happiness in a way different than I have in the past. The thoughts, feelings, and experiences shared here are from my perspective and no one else’s.

A snippet from a recent post: It is only fitting that I start my next journey during Nurses Week. That on Florence Nightingale’s birthday I was in class discussing using research and data to transform nursing practice. That this week that honors and celebrates the amazing work all nurses do, I was stepping out of my comfort zone, going from ‘expert’ back to a novice of sorts. While many were graduating programs and starting their journey as new clinicians or administrators or educators, I am purchasing books and software and attending immersion week…

ER Nurse Insanity: The Traveling Years

I’m in my mid twenties, love Jesus, and have no verbal filter which suits my job in the ER very well. I’ve been a nurse for five years and it’s amazing how much I’ve learned in such a short time- and even more amazing how much I still need to learn. At any rate I’m loving my job and loving the learning. I also love action movies, beer, camping, football, and high heels. The name Shrtstormtrooper comes from a long established understanding that I suffer from incurable nerditis. I do so love all nerdy things and that love started with Star Wars. In short, I’m living the good life.

Yeah, no, I’m not talking about you. Actually, I’m not even technically an RN. I used to be a CNA and I watch lots of shows on Discovery and TLC, I’ve had 8 kids and I read a lot of stuff about natural remedies on the internet so I think I’m pretty much qualified to be one. I’m currently unemployed so all of these stories are just things I think up when I’m at home during the commercial breaks for Maury.

Stories about the experiences of a registered nurse. Now on the Psych Ward.

A snippet from a recent post: Another overtime shift! I cringed when I received the assignment- the same ward where I had worked overtime a few weeks ago. One of the orderlies on that ward is so nasty to me. On that day, while hanging out in the back of the nurse’s station, playing on her phone, this nasty person screamed at me, “You are the only nurse who has to tell me to do work.” She named a bunch of other nurses and added, “They don’t have to tell me what to do. I just DO IT.” “So your behavior today is something you do to me only?” I asked. She stumbled with the concept for a moment and then blurted out, “YES.”
